The Republic of San Marino, also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, was founded in the fourth century and takes its name from Marinus, a stone-mason who sought refuge when fleeing religious persecution in the 3rd century. Located in north-central Italy, San Marino is known for its castles, cliffs and cobbled streets, offering a picturesque and tranquil setting in which to relax after the exciting races.
Its size is just over 61 square kilometers, with a population of just a little over 30,000, the smallest of all members of the Council of Europe. Its capital is the City of San Marino, and its official language is Italian. An interesting fact: there are more vehicles registered in San Marino than people, so dedication to motor sports makes a heavy impact in this small republic.
For those looking to catch a little bit of sun while on their weekend break, there are plenty of beaches to choose from in this region of Italy. We have put together a list with suggestions of what else to do while here, which you can read below in Things To Do.
The nearest airport to the circuit is the Rimini Federico Fellini Airport, which is around 12km away from the Misano Adriatico circuit.

If you are looking for local adventures, however, San Marino offers a large variety of things to do: visit castles and fortresses in the small region, such as Guaita Fortress on Monte Titano, the highest peak in San Marino. Enjoy the local Sammarinese cuisine at the many restaurants welcoming you, and take a tour of the Republic capital on foot.
Registered as World Heritage Site in 2008, the Guaita Fortress is one of the three towers built on Monte Titano. This 11th century building once served as a prison, and now offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city of San Marino, which it overlooks. On clear days, you can see as far as the Adriatic Sea.
Palazzo Pubblico and Piazza della Libertu00E0
Once the foundation of the city's military defenses, the Palace is now the home of the San Marino Parliament. This beautiful building is located on the city walls and boasts a guard tower that has been preserved perfectly throughout the years.
Nearby to the Palazzo is the Piazza della Libertu00E0, or Liberty Square. This is the perfect place to relax in one of the many bars and cafe close by, and enjoy the views.
Tavullia, a small municipality in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, is located only 40km from San Marino, and the hometown of Valentino Rossi. To fans of Rossi, the San Marino MotoGP is the home race, and as a result, it may be possible to enjoy activities centered around the sport, and around The Doctor.
Whether you wish to kick back and relax, walk along a busy shopping street, or enjoy Italian cuisine at its finest, the Adriatic coast of Italy is a good place to be. The Republic of San Marino is a stone-throw away from Rimini and Riccione, coastline cities with thriving night life, cuisine and shopping districts.
Or why not head a little further, if time allows it, and see Bologna, capital of the Emilia-Romagna Region of northern Italy. At about the same distance in the West from San Marino, you can find Florence, famous for its Duomo, the cathedral designed by Brunelleschi.
In San Marino, the climate is warm and temperate. The highest temperatures are registered in August, with an average of 24u00B0C.
