Silverstone’s humble origins as a World War II airfield gave the track its distinctive elongated shape. Originally established as RAF Silverstone, the circuit layout has preserved elements of its wartime runway creating opportunities for exhilarating high speed racing where drivers can unleash their cars’ full potential.
Drivers take advantage of the aerodynamic draft created by the car in-front on the long straights causing high-speed slipstreaming and overtaking opportunities. Other remnants of the runway influence the circuit’s design resulting in some infamous corners and bends such as Copse, Maggotts and Becketts, all of which require a delicate balance of precision, skill and bravery to navigate successfully.
The layout of the Silverstone circuit itself has been designed with the fans in mind providing many spectator areas and strategically placed grandstands. Fans witness high-speed battles, daring overtakes and on-track rivalries from numerous vantage points, enhancing their experience.
The passionate crowds have always made for an electric atmosphere, with fans coming from across the world to catch a glimpse of the machines piloted by the superstar drivers, and to hear the unmistakable roar of the Formula 1 engines.
An F1 driver favourite
Silverstone is a track drivers eagerly anticipate as it allows them to unleash both their capabilities and that of the supremely engineered cars they drive. From the start-finish line they can hit eighth gear and race through the exhilarating ‘new’ Abbey turn at nearly 300 km/h. As Williams’ Alex Albon once said “Every driver loves Silverstone because it’s the sort of track where these fantastic cars really come to life.”
The spiritual home of the British Grand Prix for 70 years, Silverstone has been the stage for some remarkable F1 moments especially for the home drivers who have etched their names in British racing history and will do so for decades to come.
