One of Formula 1’s flagship races, the spectacular Singapore Grand Prix took the sport into a new realm. The series’ first night race around a perilous street circuit, with conditions pushing the drivers to the absolute limit.
Away from the circuit, the Grand Prix hosts the world’s biggest music acts in a post-race celebration, while fans enjoy the sights, food and culture of this city-state.
With the track taking over the streets of Singapore, the circuit utilises a number of pre-existing grandstands (including one of the biggest on the calendar) as well as pop-up structures.
As most fans recommend wandering from stand to stand and soaking up the different vantage points around the city, this guide will take you through the best stands at Marina Bay, and help you decide which ticket is best for you.
Note: You will notice that none of the grandstands are covered. Despite the normally tropical climate in Singapore, it has hosted wet races before. Such as in 2017, when the heavens opened and wreaked havoc at the start of the race. We recommend keeping an eye on the weather forecast, and packing a reusable poncho for any trip for the race.
Grandstands at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix
Turn 2 Grandstand
Action zones: Turns 1, 2 and 3; grid; pit exit
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: Yes, on opposite side of track
The Turn 2 Grandstand is perpendicular to the Turn 1 grandstand. Rather than facing the turn 1-3 complex, your seat will be facing the starting grid. This offers a unique view of the race, and any fallout from contact heading into turn 1 will happen in the run-off area right in front of the stand. You’ll also get a good view right down the pit lane, and see under/overcuts happen right before your eyes as you’ll see cars exit both the final corner and the pit lane.
Connaught Grandstand
Action zones: Turn 14
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: One, which may be at a slight angle at either end of stand
Singapore is full of jaw-dropping city scenery, and the Connaught Grandstand is right in the midst of it. Overlooking the enormous Theatres on the Bay dome building, and in the shadow of the cities many high-rise skyscrapers, it provides an awesome spot to soak in the atmosphere.
The grandstand is located in the braking zone of turn 14, which is at the end of the longest DRS zone on the circuit. A prime position to see overtakes, it’s also a grandstand that’s nearby the main concert stage, making it one of the best all-round positions to see race.
Pit Grandstand
Action zones: Starting grid; start-finish straight; pit lane.
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: Yes, on opposite pit building
The Pit Grandstand at the Marina Bay Circuit stretches the length of the starting grid. It stretches back roughly 20 rows from the edge of the circuit, putting fans at the front right in the midst of the action. Fans at the back of the stand will have a great panoramic view of the cars exiting the final corner, bursting down the straight and towards turn 1. Opposite the impressive pit building and under the bright lights, this is where the atmosphere of the Singapore Grand Prix is best felt before the race.
Turn 1 Grandstand
Action zones: Turns 1, 2 and 3; pit exit
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: Yes, on opposite side of track
The Turn 1 Grandstand is next to the Pit Grandstand, but further down the straight. It offers a great view of the opening complex of corners, which has often caught drivers out. In 2017, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen were all caught out, crashing out at the first turn. You’ll also get a great view of the pit exit to see whether a driver has executed their strategy to perfection.
Bay Grandstand
Action zones: Turns 17 and 18
Seat type: Grandstand seating
Covered: No
Numbered seating: No
Big screen visible: Yes, two placed high on opposite side of track
The Bay Grandstand is the biggest grandstand at the circuit, and one of the biggest on the whole Formula 1 calendar. Seating 27,000 people, the extraordinary structure floats on the Marina Bay, and overlooks the water and is also used as a grandstand for sports matches all-year long.
During a Formula 1 race, cars navigate approach and pass the grandstand at a relatively slow pace. However it is one of only two grandstand in Formula 1 through which the cars drive (the other being the Foro Sol in Mexico). That makes the Bay Grandstand a pretty unique spectacle, and one of the most popular grandstands in Singapore.
Turn 3 Premier Grandstand
Action zones: Turns 1, 2 and 3
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: Yes, directly opposite
The Turn 3 Grandstand is a hugely exciting place to watch the Grand Prix in Singapore. Following the heavy braking in turn 3, the cars jostle for position through the slow corners of turns 2 and 3, which complete this key overtaking zone. The Turn 3 Grandstand faces the third turn, where you will see the cars bound down towards a fast straight section.
Stamford Grandstand
Action zones: Turns 7 and 8
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: Yes, on opposite side of track
The Stamford Grandstand is located just around the corner from turn 7, which is a key overtaking zone. It is at the end of a long straight and one of the fastest sections of the track, which features a DRS zone. Fans in this grandstand will be able to see if a driver can defend their position, or succumb to an overtake at a key point of the track.
It’s also an opportunity to get very close to the circuit, with the first row of seats pretty much at track level. For fans looking to get a close-up photo of a Formula 1 car, this is a great grandstand option.
Padang Grandstands
Action zones: Turns 9 and 10
Seat type: Grandstand seating with backs
Covered: No
Numbered seating: Yes
Big screen visible: Yes, several on opposite side of track
There are two Padang Grandstands located along the short burst between turns 9 and 10. While it would be pretty difficult for cars to overtake along this narrow section of track, fans will witness the power of the cars at full throttle. The grandstands are also very close to the circuit, and against the backdrop of Singapore’s exquisite National Art Gallery.
These grandstands flank either side of the main entertainment stage, the Padang Stage. If you don’t want to miss a moment of the top-class entertainment after the race, you will get there much quicker from these stands than you might from elsewhere on the track.
