Since its debut in 2016 (as the European Grand Prix before transitioning to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix a year later), Formula 1 racing in Baku has grown into one of the most popular street circuits on the calendar.
The Republic of Azerbaijan lies with the Caspian Sea to the east and on the boarder of Eastern Europe and Western Asia and is famed for Baku’s inner walled city – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The circuit itself is held on the streets of the country’s capital Baku and is a track of mind-boggling extremes. In 2016 Valtteri Bottas achieved the fastest recorded speed of an F1 car – an incredible 378 km/h (234.9 m/ph) down the main straight. While at the other end of the spectrum the circuit also features the narrowest section of track on the F1 calendar, just 7.6 metres wide around the fortress walls of Baku’s old city.
