A classic start to the 2026 WRC season

The 2026 season kicked off earlier this year at Rallye Monte-Carlo (22–25 January), where Toyota’s Oliver Solberg swept to victory in the GR Yaris 1. The Swede finished 9th overall in 2025 having won just one rally, while 2025 champion Sébastien Ogier could only manage third.

A calendar built on variety

The early phase of the season has already demonstrated the diversity that defines the FIA World Rally Championship. From the winter conditions of Sweden to gravel classics such as Kenya and Portugal, drivers face a wide range of terrain and conditions.

Asphalt rallies in Croatia, the Canary Islands and Japan add further contrast to the schedule, ensuring the championship continues to offer a balanced mix of surfaces throughout the year.

Newer rallies strengthen the global calendar

Several events introduced or reintroduced in recent seasons remain key parts of the schedule. The Canary Islands and Paraguay continue to build on their successful inclusions in 2025, helping expand the championship’s global reach.

The 2026 campaign will ultimately conclude on the dramatic desert terrain of Saudi Arabia from 11–14 November, bringing the season to a spectacular finish.

Rally Japan’s new position improves sporting balance

One of the most notable calendar adjustments for 2026 was the decision to move Rally Japan into a May slot. By interrupting what would otherwise be a long sequence of gravel rallies, the change helps reduce the impact of road sweeping for early championship leaders.

The move reflects a wider effort from the organisers to ensure a more balanced and competitive sporting fight across the season.

A calendar designed with teams and fans in mind

“This is a calendar built with purpose,” said WRC Promoter Managing Director Jona Siebel. “It’s diverse, it flows well, and it reflects the feedback we’ve had from teams, drivers and stakeholders. We’ve put real thought into how the sequence of events can impact the sporting fight.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem added: “The 2026 WRC calendar is a powerful reflection of the championship’s global strength and appeal. It combines the heritage of iconic rallies with the return of newer events in regions where participation and interest in rallying continues to grow.”
